3 tracks: songs you WILL HEAR tomorrow!

Here are three edits of three songs I LOVE! You will definitely hear these SHIFT-favorites tomorrow at our 2-year anniversary! I'm so excited!

KYLIE TICKET CONTEST (tomorrow @ SHIFT)

So, guess what?! We are giving away 2 KYLIE TICKETS tomorrow at SHIFT. What do you have to do? Well... I'll give you my number and address... and you can use your imagination.
I kid. I kid.
We are actually having the glorious BRIGHTEST YOUNG GAYS (follow them on twitter) judge our contest! What YOU have to do is dress up like the most fabulous pirate since One-Eyed Willy.

Don't worry, you don't have to be on stage at any point (unless you're dancing). The judges (3) will be walking around, headed by the jovial John Marble, checking out those of you who dress up.

BYGay Guidelines
  • Use your outfit to highlight your ample pirate bootie, or tailor it to emphasize your mighty pirate sword.
  • Halloween rules pretty much apply as contest rules: Outfits can be scary OR slutty.
  • If in doubt, remember that everything will look better with rum.
  • Chicks (and contest judges) dig pirate scars.
  • Dressing as Johnny Depp in "Pirates of the Carribean" WILL NOT COUNT. Dressing as Johnny Depp in "Edward Scissorhands" totally will!
  • *Remember to complete your outfit with pirate teeth!

fresh: Two Door Cinema Club remix

Here's a fantastic Two Door Cinema Club remix across which I recently stumbled. I love the original of this track more than all, but this remix is equally as good as the previously posted one by Keljet.

If you still don't know TDCC, know this: they're one of THE MOST exciting dance rock bands to surface in quite some time. And, after seeing them at 930 Club last month, I can tell you that they can back that assertion up quite well.

I also want the bassist to have my babies (on the right).

Get into it:

Guest dj spotlight: JUNEBULLET

Junebullet is an innovator. She has captured a balance that few dual DJ/promoters attain in this city: adding to the aesthetic and making a positive difference in the community. Known to her friends as simply Maegan Wood, Junebullet helped form the FIRST LADIES DJ COLLECTIVE, an all-female crew dedicated to promoting and empowering female DJ's in the nation's capital and beyond. Since then, she has gone on to perform at clubs, parties, festivals, and events from New York to Berlin. This includes co-headlining with SHIFT resident DJ MAJR at last year's awesome Capital Pride closing party, Homo Erectus.

Today, Junebullet is an active member of the DC queer scene, with parties such as HottBoxx, Be:XX, and her current successful night: She.Rex. In addition to nightlife, she brings innovative DJ workshops and classes to individuals, groups, and community spaces. These workshops have appeared at Girls Rock! DC, Artisphere, and local clubs including the Black Cat, Lace, Dodge City, and DC9.

Check out Junebullet on Saturday at SHIFT Presents: SURRENDER. YOUR. BOOTY (2 Years Anniversary) at Cobalt. She will be trading off with Homo/Sonic resident Zack Rosen (The New Gay) downstairs ALL NIGHT. She is sure to not only keep you moving, but also make you thankful, on so many levels, that she's a HUGE part of the DC nightlife scene.

fresh: NEW Robyn Mix!

This is pretty overdue, I must admit. I have heard more remixes of Robyn's Dancing On My Own than probably any track in the last year, but I still had yet to do an edit of one. I chose the Buzz Junkies' remix because it is, simply, superior in dance quality to all the others. Still, it had a few major flaws in danceability (at least foAdd Imager me). I'm an avid dancer. I love to jump around (god knows you've probably seen me if you live in DC), so I wanted something that would keep me moving.

[Check out more DJ MAJR edits HERE.]

All that said, I am so proud of the little (and some very big) tweaks I did to this remix. I dropped about 90 seconds off the track and condensed it into the perfect dance track, if such a thing can exist. I'm officially (for the first time in a few months) excited to play this song again! Check it out and tell me what you think...

LYKKE LI!

Get wounded.

essentials: mstrkrft remixes w/ majr edits

Here are two very different remixes of two very different artists. One has talent, the other has tits. One is amazing, the other is atrocious... BUT, we do have two very good remixes that needed some tweaking from yours truly. Katy Perry & Metric, both remixed by MSTRKRFT (3+ years apart) and edited by DJ MAJR. Enjoy!

NEW Lykke Li track(s)

This is just beautiful. Lykke Li is getting ready to take over the pop world. Mark my words. She is a star once on the rise, now ready to take ascend the universe. Wow!

remix monday: some majr madonna

The first request I have received for Saturday's BIG EVENT was the Sidechains remix of Madonna's Into The Groove. I LOVE this track, but I don't like the filler, so I edited it down. It was superbly easy, but makes a world of difference in momentum (no mid-song lull, or long terrible outro). So, go on.. get into your groove. :)

NEW SHIFTEASERMIX! - 2 Years of MUTINY!

This month's SHIFTeaserMix is a retrospective of two fantastic years of dancing our faces into oblivion. These 31 tracks (in 60mins) have been my favorites to play over the last two years. They are what dance music should be, and I hope you enjoy this as much as I do. Wow... I can't believe it's been two years. I love you all and can't thank you enough for all the support.

my favorite dance song ever...

... no, really. NOT joking. This song makes me shake it harder than any other. I have been dancing to it for 6 years now. God, I love it. AND NOW I GIVE IT TO YOU! Just let it marinate...

FANTASTIC Florence 'Dog Days' remix!

So, last week I was in Tucson (at Hotel Congress... which is kind of like a Rock N Roll Hotel meets Black Cat), and though they were about 6 months behind on most songs played (which I loved because I heard songs I hadn't heard in a few months), they did play a remix of Florence + The Machine that is probably the best Dog Days Are Over remix that I have heard! I am tempted to edit this track into a club banger of sorts so I can play it at SHIFT. Huzzah!
You know you want this:

NEW RADIOHEAD VIDEO NEW RADIOHEAD VIDEO NEW RADIOHEAD VIDEO NEW RADIOHEAD VIDEO NEW RADIOHEAD VIDEO NEW RADIOHEAD VIDEO

Oh, did you hear, there's a NEW RADIOHEAD VIDEO ?!?!?

Expect me to be ranting and raving for weeks... they are by far my favorite band and i've waited 3 years, 4 months, and 9 days for this moment...

savor the taste of fabricated wealth

I posted this Marina & The Diamonds edit of Fred Falke the other day on Facebook. I hope you guys enjoy it! It's only the slightest edit, but it's one of my favorite songs of the last year.

fresh: NEW STROKES!

I know I have been ranting about this for over a week, but I wanted to wait until today to post it. I had a busy weekend on vacation, and now I'm back in sight and whiter than ever!

This is my favorite song so far in 2011, titled Under Cover of Darkness from The Strokes new album Angles (set for a March 22 drop). So. Good. It's a return to the older sound (circa 2001's Is This It) that made The Strokes so novel and defined an entire decade of indie dance rock. The additional aspect of this track that rules my world is that it's more mature than a decade ago, as evidenced by, not one, but TWO choruses in one track that are both stellar.

It's like The Strokes finally got fed up with the young hipster douchebag bands that borrowed pieces of their sound and put them in their place.

They are NOT DEAD YET!
1-CLICK-DL

Now... let's see what the kings of music, Radiohead, has for us on Saturday... Oh, YOU DIDN'T KNOW!?!? ... They are releasing their new album online this Saturday! Typical Radiohead... out of the box and in your face.

won't you tell me your name

A little edit (of this PRO7 remix) I did that I find quite amusing. I hope you dig it too! I love everything about The Doors. From their brooding persona, to the visceral guitar and general sense of 'fuck you it's freedom.' I adore them. Enjoy!

friends: peach pit tomorrow!

One of my favorite parties, for those of you that enjoy some quality retro, is PEACH PIT! This month, it comes to DC9! When you're tired of waiting to get upstairs at Nellies, just walk next door and listen to some old school Janet mixed with Mariah, and even some No Doubt, Haddaway, and En Vogue. It's fantastic if you love the 1990's. DJ Matt Bailer is a fantastic craftsman, as well. He will be joining DJ Zack Rosen (homo/sonic) and Junebullet (She-Rex) at SHIFT's TWO YEAR ANNIVERSARY on the 26th!!! Get on it!

DC9 (9th & U NW)
$5, 21+
10:00pm -> whenever you get a cramp
For gays, their friends, and those who remember watching Undressed on MTV.

MUSE remixes

Today I want to celebrate MUSE, one of the most unique bands in the world. They have a massive sound for a 3-piece, and often take stadium rock into the realm of the orchestral. Here are my two favorite remixes of theirs:

friends: homo/sonic this saturday!

Homo/Sonic returns this Saturday to The Black Cat on 14th, between S & T, NW. Definitely check this party out, guys. It was one of the original indie gay dance parties, and is heavy on the indie dance-rock. This month's is a celebration of DJ Natty Boom's birthday. She's a sweetheart, so definitely give her a "fuck yeah" high-five for me. Also playing will be Zack Rosen and Michael Eichler. Great guys. Keep it up, y'all!

BLACK CAT (upstairs)
$10
All Ages
For gays and friends of gays and friends of gays who are really gay but aren't ready to admit they smoke pole.

fresh: NEW KILLS!

Here is a new track by The Kills! It's not as happy, sardonic, or danceable as their last album, but it has this wonderfully Jack White feel to it that brings a smile to my face. Get down on it...

essentials: au revoir simone remixes!

Here are a couple of essential Au Revoir Simone remixes that are f***ing gorgeous. I hope you enjoy them as much as I do! They're low key and fantastic, as well as being remixes of my favorite two tracks by Au Revoir Simone. If you don't know ARS, they are one of the most beautiful bands out there. For fans of Azure Ray, Lykke Li, Stars, Mates of State, Metric, Cat Power, The XX, Metronomy, and The Notwist.

it just takesss what it wantsss

remix monday: need another one?

For those of you tired of playing the Robyn A-Trak remix over and over and over and over and over... here's a track that stays more true to the original track. I almost like it more.

one of the best songs i've ever seen live...

i sound my barbaric yawp over the rooftops of the world!

Put a little exclamation back in your weekend! (I'm a huge Tears For Fears fan, if you did not know...)

i edit the master

NEW stuff from The Sounds

Usually I do three tracks on Thursdays, but today I shall do two new tracks from The Sounds! Pretty excited about this, not gonna lie. Though they aren't the most original or talented group, they are really fun and can consume you at times. Here are two BRAND NEW tracks from them! Eat'em up before the man makes me take them down! The new album Something To Die For is set to be released March 29!

fresh: a little edit i did...

... so I got in a mood to take an ordinary pop song of a couple years ago and make it fabulous. Taio Cruz is immensely well managed. He gets Dr. Luke to write most of his hits (he's basically like Ke$ha or Krappy Perry in this respect), but he has the joy of using Luciana (one of my favorite female artists) in this track. She has yet to really break in the U.S., but I love her anyway. Her style is aggressive and raunchy in all the right ways.

The original track didn't take advantage of Luciana at all. It emphasized Terdo Cruz way too much and completely avoided how fantastic my little cockney cunt is. I decided to manipulate it as much as possible. And, now, I love it like a baby jesus skinned purse. Enjoy!

ps: excuse the rough edit of this... all edits, as always, are made for me to play live and are always a work in progress... welcome to my world :)

essentials: fischerspooner remixes

I love me some Fischerspooner! They have been so good for so long, while also influencing so many in the electro industry. Here are some remixes of theirs that I deem essentials for any lover of electro. These remixes, including one that I edited, are exactly what I need right now. I do love that Casey Spooner is out on his own making a record, but he (IMO) is aurally empty without the amazing Fischer producing the sound that is unmistakably theirs. These remixes span all three of their fantastic albums, including my personal favorite Odyssey (Just Let Go). Get 'em!
