"Heavy Metal Lover (toMOOSE remix)" - Lady Gaga

Since I first heard Lady Gaga's most recent LP, Born This Way, I have always claimed Heavy Metal Lover to be my favorite track off the record. It is the direction I thought she'd go with the whole album, but instead I got three tracks that went that direction, and this was the best of the three. The other two are Government Hooker and Scheiße. I've always been critical of this self-entitled wench, but you must always give credit where it's due, and this track is so damned solid, I cannot deny it. I'm honestly more pumped about playing this tomorrow @ SIREN than anything else.
The only reason I have barely played the track as a DJ is because it wasn't quite danceable enough (on the high end) to throw it into house sets, but THAT IS NO MORE, thanks to toMOOSE! I finally found a decent remix of the track, and I shall take advantage of this opportunity like the awkward drunk frat boy at the sorority mixer. So, hold onto your asses, girls, this one is going to take you down (to the dance floor):

weekenditty: "Disco Heaven" - Lady Gaga

A lot of people never got the "Deluxe Edition" of The Fame. But, if you did, you know that this next track is a priceless little bitchin' gem. If there was ever a signal that Lady Gaga's sound has changed, it's the kind of tracks you hear in her B-sides from The Fame. In any case, here's my favorite track of those. In Disco Heaven, you hear a young, hungry, fun-filled Gaga... which by today's standards is pretty hard to conceptualize. Now, I'm not saying her head has inflated so large that she's overstated her relevance... but I am. Ha. Enjoy:

"Electric Chapel (Two Door Cinema Club remix)" - Lady Gaga

Of all the remixes on Lady Gaga's somewhat terrible remix album, this one takes the cake. Perhaps it's because I love Two Door Cinema Club - or I just love anything that sounds a little more indie-electro - but this remix is truly an interesting, if not awesome, take on one of the somewhat forgettable tracks from Born This Way.

Since I can't currently upload to mediafire (I'm posting remotely), if you want the track, just shoot me an email at MAJRmusic@gmail.com

I hope everyone is as excited as I am for Friday! It's going to be the cat's pajamas. I may even play this. WOOHOO!

"Marry the Night (David Jost Twin remix)" - Lady Gaga

So, here's a fresh little ditty of a remix. Since Lady Gaga is finally releasing a song that doesn't blow balls off Born This Way, I am excited to post remixes of it! Hooray! Way to not fuck up anymore, woman. There are 5 songs on the album that should have been released already: Americano, Heavy Metal Lover, Scheiße, Government Hooker, and Marry the Night. Now, I have to admit I didn't hate Judas nearly as much as I wanted to- it had a wonderful electro edge- but it can't hold a candle to the previously mentioned quintet.

Alas, here we have the first remix of Marry the Night that I haven't immediately trashed. Done by relatively unknown David Jost Twin, this is a really interesting take on the recording. So, enjoy another lovely polished turd... just kidding. This is pretty good, though I do enjoy the original a little more.

Gaga... finally a song I liked released off the album...

Here's the glorious Lady Gaga performing on X-Factor. I wasn't floored by this, but I was impressed that she stayed mostly in-key. The song really is a showcase of her vocal talent, and I'm glad she pulled it off. The performance was quite good, and I'm glad she took a dramatic angle with its delivery.

fresh: DJ MAJR dancifies Highway Unicorn

So, I like this song by Lady Gaga. It's not her best, but it's a quality track, and I really wanted to make it ready for the dance floor. I cut it up into pieces, sewed it back together like a post-birth vagina, gave it a nice intro and outro for mixing (I especially love the outro), and sped up the tempo from 128 to 130. I, personally, love it... and I hope you do too! ("album cover" by the glorious Gordon Wells)

3 track thursday: röyksopp remixes

So today I have been in a Royksopp mood. A big one! I just got a ticket to the one-time-only Robyn/Royksopp show in L.A. on October 22, and I'm basically peeing my pants. Anyway, this definitely got me in the mood to hear some sonically perfect Royksopp remixes, and ta-dah... perfect segway to a 3-Track-Thursday! The first two here have that signature Royksopp sound of the last 2 albums, but the last track has a more old-school gorgeous, lush slow sound. Enjoy!

JUDAS (ROYKSOPP remix) - LADY GAGA

PUPPETS (ROYKSOPP remix) - DEPECHE MODE

IN THIS SHIRT (ROYKSOPP remix) - THE IRREPRESSIBLES

fresh: J-Lo gets hypnotized by Gaga

I'm not a huge fan of Jennifer Lopez. There- I said it. I know you all are very shocked. She is, indeed, nothing close to quality, BUT- I do have an open mind when it comes to quality pop music. So, when my friend Michael decided to throw me a bonus track from Jennifer's new idiotically titled L.P., (L.O.V.E? or whatever the hell it's called), that was written by Lady Gaga (which nowadays doesn't say much), I was both intrigued and skeptical. But, lopez and be-effing-hold, it's pretty damned good. It won't change your life, but it should make you dance.

And, yes, if you notice that dance beat seeming familiar, it's the same 119 BPM that Lady Gaga can't stop fellating (e.g. Just Dance, Poker Face, Money Honey, Bad Romance ... ALL in 119.0). Hooray!

fresh: best of Born This Way / album review

So, you have heard the first few singles from the album Born This Way and aren't impressed? Are you depressed and/or upset about it? FRET NOT! There are 5 hidden gems in this LP that are so good that they almost make you (well they actually make me) MAD that her record company and/or she is too stupid to pick them out as singles. God knows what goes through their heads when they decide which songs are to be released... but that's okay. These songs are fantastic. Brilliant. Reminders of what one of pop's biggest stars is capable. Here are the TOP 5 songs on Born This Way. You will hear ALL of these on Saturday at THE ZOO BALL! Enjoy!
5.) BLOODY MARY (7.0/10)
This song just beats out Judas for the 5th spot. It does so because its mix of dark and melancholy minor chords are simply more memorable than the electo-clash meet disco of Judas. It's growing on me daily and is one of two tracks on the album that are a departure from her previous song equations (the other being #1). It is not higher on the rankings because it is simply not as good as they are (and the lame breakdown at 2:50 doesn't help, either), but it is a good song - a VERY good song.

4.) AMERICANO (8.5/10)
This song probably makes me dance harder than on the album. And, to be honest, that shocked me. I usually don't like any songs like this... but it's just so well done. It's quirky, funny, well produced, and is a perfect 128 dance bpm. It is probably the most explosive song on the album and begs you to put your hands in the air. And, at the end, the hilarious "don't you try to catch me" breakdown just kills me. Amazing.

3.) GOVERNMENT HOOKER (9.0/10)
This song is sadistic, hilarious, sad, dark, and obviously a tongue-in-cheek social commentary. Musically this is nothing short of stellar and the first song on the album to really grab me (besides the "c'mon and ruuuun..." part in Marry The Night). And, let's face it, who in D.C. isn't a government hooker?

2.) SHEIßE (9.0/10)
Euro-electro-muthafuckin' dance, through and through. This song is pure get-the-fuck-up-and-move and I love every part of it. Favorite moment is easily "I'll take you out tonight..." Adore this song enough to originally say it was my favorite on the album - until the next track grew on me tremendously. Hands-in-air required.

1.) HEAVY METAL LOVER (9.5/10.0)
This song is pure and simple: it is good art. It is the direction a lot of us thought she'd go: quality dance electro with a stealthy, sexy edge that can't quite be mimicked by her contemporaries... at least not to the same quality level. Every part of this song is perfectly done. A rare 9.5/10.0 from DJ MAJR.

Other track rankings/quick comments from DJ MAJR
7.0/10.0 - Marry The Night
Decent, could be better, but decent album entry track.
5.5/10.0 - Born This Way
For a gay anthem as big as it is, it could use more tweaking.
7.0/10.0 - Judas
Doesn't quite get the credit it deserves.
4.5/10.0 - Hair
Horribly written, but an infectious chorus.
7.0/10.0 - Black Jesus - Amen Fashion
I sort of love this song as a filler track. "Work it Black Jesus" kills me.
5.0/10.0 - Bad Kids
Has potential, but alas that potential isn't fulfilled.
3.5/10.0 - Fashion Of His Love
I'm not sure what she's thinking here... but she should just stop.
5.5/10.o - Highway Unicorn (Road To Love)
As a ridiculous dance pop track, it's on the same level as Born This Way, but better produced.
4.5/10.0 - Electric Chapel
Not good. Decent vocals. Terrible premise. Nothing more worth saying.
7.0/10.0 - The Queen
As far as the horribly written tracks, this is the cream of that crop. Infectious to a proverbial 'T.'
1.0/10.0 - You And I
Shit.
2.5/10.0 - The Edge Of Glory
Somewhere between contemporary christian rock music hell and Cher's cemetery of chord progressions lies this track.

ALBUM GRADE: 6.03/10.0

GAGA-PEACHES WEEK Day 1 - fav remixes

Here are my favorite remixes of Lady Gaga and Peaches. I'm getting so excited for Friday's SIREN: F**K THE FAME AWAY. It's going to be dark, sexy, dance-heavy, and a complete escape into the fun visceral side of pop music.

I chose the Alejandro remix because Bimbo Jones made me like my least favorite song on the Fame Monster album. Alejandro is simply a boring song, and he made it danceable and energetic. I found myself singing it while walking after hearing this and if you haven't heard it, you probably will too. (If it goes over downloads, just email me at SHIFTdc@gmail.com and I'll send it to you personally).

On the other side of the ball is the heavy, angry, distorted (but still awesomely danceable) remix of Boys Wanna Be Her by the ultra-reliable Tommie Sunshine. Heart him. This song will make you dance, no matter if you know the song or not. It's a deliberate stomp-beat, and I love that. Do not listen to this song at a party if you have downstairs neighbors. Haha.

Born This Way (Bimbo Jones vs. DJ MAJR edit) - Lady Gaga

Bimbo Jones, one of my favorite DJ outfits to see in the last year, has once again done a great job with a pop track. They really have a solid understanding of what makes a substantial pop remix.
They took on a track that (though I doubt anyone can really make it any better than it is... which still doesn't say a lot) is so clubby it's difficult to improve, Lady Gaga's Born This Way. So, I took this 6+ minute remix and cut it into a tolerable piece of music that won't bore me to pieces. Hooray! Enjoy:

3rd Annual Dirty Dozen (2010) - WORST OF 2010

Here is my favorite part of the year-end round-up: The WORST of the year. These are the moments that turn my stomach, make me angry, or simply leave me befuddled in the worst possible way.

12. Kelis - Live
Now, say what you will about Kelis' great album (after all, I rank it #4 of 2010), but I had the chance to see her live twice this summer... and she was simply not good. She wasn't the worst act I'd ever seen, but she wasn't far behind. Her fantastic album was made flaccid by a blatant lack of enthusiasm, stuffed into a turquoise spandex sausage-casing of an outfit (thanks Cass!) and topped with a wig made of metallic pom-pom. She looked like the ghost of cassette tape past, while singing (though she wasn't ALWAYS off-key) poorly in comparison to the album. Let-down. Ugh, indeed.

11. Jimmy Eat World's Comeback
I was a rather big J.E.W. fan for a long time. I suspected their last album was simply a flop in pop-rock, and that they'd come back swinging punches of indie-rock ferocity. Instead, they cranked out an album that sounded like a b-sides collection, with only 3 songs tolerable enough for me to play. This is a lot to swallow from a band that threw out three fantastic front-to-back albums with Clarity, Bleed American, and Futures. Hot vomit.

10. LA Riots Abandon Indie Dance
I love watching LA riots spin; I really do. They have a great stage presence, play well, and get the crowd into their sets. Sadly, though, since the DJ duo has reformatted, they have abandoned the sound that made them popular, as evidenced by their big remixes of acts such as The Ting Tings, Kylie Minogue, Heartsrevolution, VHS or Beta and Scanners. Now, they aren't absolutely obnoxiously terrible.. they simply aren't exceptional. They are status quo, and that's just plain sad.

09. Usher Goes Gay
Did anyone else notice that the above-average-talented Usher gave up on making meaningful pop and instead made a fleet (enema) of gay dancefloor-centric crappers? The remixed versions of his tunes were his only saving grace, which has zero to do with him. Yes, I enjoy a gay club dancefloor sometimes, but every time his songs would come on, my stomach would turn. They auto-tuned the hell out of him, when he does have a voice in a lower range that is just fine how it is, and they made him sound like a black Richard Simmons. Blichard Simmons, heyyyyy.

08. Lady Gaga's Janky-Ass Teeth
No, not her actually dental issues. God knows she's finally got those fixed. I'm talking about her allowing this video to be made. It's fucking awful gaysploitation for the status quo idiot who falls over anything of lowest common denominator sexuality. I don't even want to drink Veuve now, it upsets me so. Stupid stupid stupid. Major points lost for an artist who had been batting nearly a thousand. I am pretty sure she didn't pay the actors. She just went into West Hollywood and picked up two past-prime go go dancers who still have dreams of making it modeling in something other than a Sean Cody video.

07. Interpol's Producing Debut
Interpol came back, had a great deal of hoopla surrounding their self-titled album, blatantly expressed to the world that it was their producing debut, and then shat out an album that couldn't wipe the perineum of its last three albums. Granted, we all know that their first two albums were timeless, Turn on the Bright Lights and Antics, but I expected them to up their game after a decent but not spectacular third outing, Our Love To Admire. It was especially upsetting since Julian Plenti's (lead singer's solo project) album was so surprisingly good in the interim. Alas....this was terrible. Hire someone to produce, or go the way of the buffalo. This was especially upsetting for me, as I waited so long and anticipated so much... only to be left with my **** in my hand.

06. Soundcloud Squeezes Its Snatch
So, I've used Soundcloud for a long time. It's an amazing way to get music out there for people to listen and enjoy. You have an option of allowing or disallowing a track to be downloaded via the listening wave, but in recent months this has basically all-but-stopped. Soundcloud will not let you upload ANYTHING that is attached to a record company. I know I know... blah blah blah copyright... but copyright can suck my sack. Soundcloud needs to realize how it's going to lose lots of customers because they can't spread music around, and that its squeeze on such is going to basically make them obsolete long before they should have become such. The black market of music runs the show. It makes stars out of nobodies, and forces artists to make their money performing their songs, therefore creating a sense of accountability in the music community. Suck. It. Soundcloud.

05. Ke$ha's Rise
There are many reasons why it is hard to grasp why Ke$ha is relevant. It pains me writing this, really. She's stolen every page out of every book that was ever written on how to make a pop starlet. She is a fairly horrible singer... which pales in comparison to her actual songwriting. She put a dollar sign in her name to replace an "s" (so original). She is gutter-trash chic (actually, I like that part of her). She has only been tolerable, much like Usher, through the hard work of remix artists like Fred Falke, DJ Kue, and Bimbo Jones. As much as she is a guilty pleasure of mine, I must say I pray she may she go the way of Chumbawamba as soon as possible.

04. Little Boots Cancels For Cuntchella
In what, to me, was the line-up of the year: Little Boots, French Horn Rebellion, and Dragonette, actually became the year's biggest cocktease. Little Boots, who is exceptional live, with the high-energy, always amazing Dragonette set to play just prior was enough... but then they added French Horn Rebellion, one of the best young bands around. It was a $15 show at 930 Club that didn't happen. Damn you Coachella for asking her to headline! In retrospect, maybe it would have ruined how good the shows were the rest of the year, but I didn't care. What a letdown! Yeah... that's all I got on that one. Just pissed. Cuntchella.
03. Like a G6
Awful. Terrible. Dreadful. Ghastly. Foul. Substandard. Abysmal. Pathetic. Grave. Vile. Abominable. Those are the descriptors of Far East Movement's Like A G6. The song is essentially awful. The bass line is catchy. The hook is below par. Lastly, it all is made worse by the fact that it was SO popular! WTF?! What is wrong with popular dance music? I hope this song ceases to be relevant in the next few months... 'else I may refuse to eat rice for a year in protest. Take that.

02. Xtina Comeback Sucks Big Balls
There were few things worse than Christina Aguilera's comeback... who knows what she was thinking. Her songs were somewhat catchy, but mostly forgettable. She sold the soul of her voice for a place back in the spotlight... only to realize that she was ill-advised and may have well destroyed her own career in the process. She has a voice, refused to use it, and now is seen as a has-been by those who aren't in love with her from the 90's. I think the rest of my feelings can be summed up in my review of her first single this year HERE. R.I.P. Genie... Enjoy your next job hosting a reality show.

01. Four Words... Katy Perry, in general
She was so bad. SOOOOOO bad. She made me more sad than upset in 2010. She produced single after single of overly produced tracks that put her boobs center-stage, and expanding the minds of her listeners somewhere backstage under of a pile of spanx and waterbras. Yes, we all sorta loved the pop aspects of her songs. The produced tracks sounded decent... but that's what's so upsetting. She is a fraud of an artist. She can't sing her tracks, and is simply getting by on her looks, wannabe P!nk-esque attitude, and producers' talents. Katy... please... just stop.

NEW Lady Gaga... again.

Lady Gaga has nothing on but the radio. Move aside Mae West, there's a new harlot in town, but with less talent. Part of me just feels bad for her producers on this one. It's not a terrible song... but it had to be before they got a hold of it. They probably spent days polishing the turds that are her lyrics.

essentials: remixes of marina, lady gaga, rihanna

Fred Falke has waved his wand and done it again! He really knows how to make songs better, as well as leave them with an inescapable Falke-stamp. He's pure talent. Check out his remix of Marina & The Diamonds' Shampain!
A few months ago Lady Gaga released an 'official' remix album. Most of it was full of excrement, except for this track. I love that she had the scrotum to use Manson for this, even if he's culturally insignificant right now. Chew Fu really is a great DJ/Producer, especially for big gay dance, which is what this is.
Mixin Marc, despite his terrible stage moniker, is making quite the name for himself in the remix world. This is the 2nd track that I've loved of his... the first was that god-awful Taio Cruz Dynamite track that sounds like Richard Simmons and Jack MacFarland's lovechild. Well... this one from Rihanna is almost as good.

robyn gets dirty with gaga

The musical goddess of all things good and quality meets the wicked witch of pop in a mash-up I deem slightly above tolerable. Hooray! Check out this mashup of Robyn's None of Dem and Lady Gaga's Beautiful Dirty Rich:

remix monday : so many monsters...

Is this the summer of the Monster? Or, is there some weird Monster theme that keeps popping up everywhere...? Is "Monster" the new Vampire of 2008/09? Or, are they one and the same. Who cares. I'd rather just enjoy the current fad and then watch it dissipate like my love-life standards. Here's a mash-up remix that I like, if nothing else, for its producer's gall. Ne-Yo vs. Gaga... enjoy!

new gaga single - dance in the dark!

It has been rumored through the interwebs that Lady Gaga's new single is to be my favorite song of hers, Dance in the Dark. Since I first received The Fame Monster I have been playing it on loop. It was in my December SHIFTeaserMix, has been dropped at nearly every SHIFT dance party since November, and it is the most wonderfully synthetic anthem she has produced. This is the FIRST video I am excited to see (whenever the hell she decides to make it). Here's the track. If you don't know it, consider yourself served. A special thank you to my SIREN partner in crime, Aaron Riggins, who scooped this up! Speaking of SIREN, you'll DEFINITELY hear it this Friday!

3 tracks: SHIFT favorites!

Here are three tracks you are sure to hear on Saturday at SHIFT! They are three tracks I love to play, always get the crowd rolling, and will probably be in my arsenal for a long time. Luciana is my favorite dirty skank. I love her more than my luggage. Teeth is maybe my 2nd favorite Gaga track (behind only Dance in the Dark). Lastly, Drop Down is the dark, heavy, infectious side of electro dance that I love. It's completely new rave (which is what I often consider my sound as a DJ to be) and makes me shake it like a shameless prostitute on a budget. SUCH good times! I'm so excited for Saturday. Hurricane SHIFT will be a category 6!
