RAW on 11/6

Be muthafuckin' there. It's DJ Shea Van Horn's newest party, and it promises to have great music w/ him and DJ Verbal Kent (both previously SHIFT guest DJ's) spinning.

Here's what they say about it:

"RAW, a night of sleaze set to a disco beat, debuts Friday, November 6, at the Green Lantern.

Wouldn’t you rather do it raw? KARL JONES, SHEA VAN HORN, and BIL TODD hope so. The three promoters who are responsible for queer alternative events including TAINT, CRACK, MIXTAPE, NOWHERE, and MAISON are teaming up to bring a new monthly party to DC’s gay nightlife. Wanting to introduce an event that “feels like disco dancing in a seedy bathhouse,” they worked with the owners of the GREEN LANTERN to create RAW, a night of sleaze and desire set to a disco beat. RAW happens on the first Friday of each month beginning this November.

The music of RAW, spun by DJs VAN HORN and TODD, will feel decidedly retro, throbbing, and a little sinister. The two plan to sidestep the mainstream and opt for underground and alternative electro, disco, italo-house, new wave, and goth; featuring artists like Soft Cell, In Flagranti, Skatt Bros, Gino Soccio, Nitzer Ebb, Ssion, DAF, Glass Candy, and the Revolting Cocks. Sample mixes of this music are on the RAW website at http://www.RAWdc.com.

The spirit of the night is to evoke the late 70s and early 80s, when going to gay bars felt a little dangerous. Imagine squeezing past groping strangers, feeling hot breath on your neck, hearing filthy whispers in the dark, gyrating to synth-heavy disco beats, and making out on the dance floor or possibly in a bathroom stall. The RAW promoters can’t guarantee that any of this will happen to those who come to their party, but it’s what they’re going for – a sordid celebration of decadence and outrageousness.

Oct SHIFT dj SHEA presents CRACK 10/17

We are happy and honored to welcome back Shea Van Horn to SHIFT on Oct 24 as a guest DJ alongside me, but in the meantime he has his own (AMAZING) production to present. CRACK is like no other show in DC and will keep you strung out for days.

This year CRACK produced variety shows that made fun of the nether regions of outer space and the bucolic lawns of suburbia. Now, DC's edgiest theater group is saddling up for a wild trip to the western heartland!

It's time for another outrageous CRACK variety show. On Saturday, October 17, CRACK is hosting an old-fashioned country jamboree at Town that will be packed with live performances, short films, audience participation, and improvisation. As usual, the bawdy show is hosted by the naughty drag queen SUMMER CAMP and features farmhands KARL JONES and CHRIS FARRIS. DC theater-goers shouldn't miss this special event that gives local performers--who have fallen through the cracks of traditional theater--a venue to showcase their hidden (and questionable) talents. The doors open at 9 PM and the show starts at 10 PM. And this time, audience members can get in on the action. General admission is $10, but audience members who wear anything country or western, receive a $2 discount. Folks are encouraged to wear cowboy hats, kerchiefs, boots, hoop skirts, bonnets, vests, or any other country outfit.
