Outro

robyn covers coldplay... no, really

And, it's not too shabby for a live performance recording. Actually, it's phenomenal. What can't Robyn do? And, who knew someone could sound like more of a big girl than Chris Martin?!

remix monday: ode to amy

I could really be cunty and inappropriate about all this, but the fact of the matter is, I really liked Amy Winehouse and thought the world of her talent. She had that kind of organic/hypersensitive creativity and talent that often walks hand-in-hand with one's inability to cope with the vividness of such sensitivities and feelings. Hot Chip did a good enough job on this for me to post it. I will miss anticipating a new album from such a fantastic songstress.

Also, I have to throw in my favorite song by Amy, You Know I'm No Good. It was this song that dragged me into her sound and never quite let me go. I used to claim this song as my theme for quite some time. (Shut up!)

Penguin Prison teleports us to the '80s

...that basically about says it all here. Penguin Prison made the track. Oliver remixed it. And, now, it's a retro-feeling piece of awesome. I could explain more about who these artists are, but you have Wikipedia... and it's Friday... and you're not really working anyway.

Paul van Dyk gives Moby the business

Paul van Dyk has always been the master of the long trance-laden remix. No one quite does it like him. He can take me places with little vocals in a way that oddly never annoys me. He definitely still has the right stuff, as evidenced by this new remix of Moby's latest release Lie Down In Darkness.
It is rare that I can stand nine minutes of remix, but PVD just gives this song the business and takes me out of my own head. Granted, you have to enjoy this genre of dance to enjoy this song, and I hope you do. Below is a 3min preview of the entire track.

fresh: 'collide (afrojack remix)' - leona lewis

Leona Lewis, despite looking somewhat similar to a llama, has produced this tolerable new song. And, just like clockwork, Afrojack has sent out his remix. What's interesting about the original track is that it's almost a carbon copy of an Avicii song called Penguin (thanks Shea). Perhaps she bought the rights (or her people did) and put vocals to it (as well as some unneeded tweaking).
As far as the Afrojack remix aspect, you definitely hear that happen around 2:30. It becomes a sudden highly-pitched club sound (which I don't know if I can tolerate) that I often hear at straight dance clubs nowadays. I personally think this sound (like or not) should go the way of the buffalo pretty soon. It's really superfluous and has little to contribute to the music. It just says to the dance "go crazy to this crazy sound," when a thousand other things that actually go with the music could do the same. But, I must admit I'm a vocally and chord-driven music listener and dancer, and I require song-empathy in order to genuinely get into it.

In the meantime, enjoy this fresh-off-the-presses remix by one of the (current) most popular DJs on the planet, and by one of the biggest stars in the UK.

remix monday: adele sets fire to the dancefloor

God bless that big girl, Adele. She is slowly taking over Remix Mondays. So, this remix starts really slowly, but when it hits, OH LORD does it hit! I adore it. I am not even that big of a fan of this track (::dodges rocks::), but this remix really does explode all over your ear like ill-timed teenage fellatio. Hooray! Enjoy!

[The Final] SIREN SamplerMix

remember that time I mentioned I was in a music video?...

SIREN Preview: Robyn

Robyn has gone from a prominent international teen pop star in the 1990's, to relative obscurity, then resurfacing in 2006 with one of the best pop albums in ages, Robyn. To prove that such was not a fluke, she returned and gave the proverbial 'fuck you' to the rules of record making and put out three different sets of songs in one year, instead of just on full album of tracks she'd wind up growing tired of performing for 2 straight subsequent years.

What is most fascinating about Robyn is not only her ability to write, sing, perform, and capture a crowd, but her immaculate consistency. Her ability to grasp the true essence of pop music is what separates her from her contemporaries.

It is when you hear her music that you realize that the Katy Perrys, Ke$has, Britney Spears's, et al may be enjoyable, but they've never been able to accomplish what Robyn has: derive deeply passionate, universally relatable, intelligently written, and masterfully produced pop music. And then, she blows you away on stage with a performance (yes, I was at the show below) full of so much energy and true artistry that you never look at pop music the same way again.
It is not so often that pop music makes me think, or challenges me in any way, but Robyn does it consistently. I love her and I hope she's around for a long time. I'm so excited to play a lot more of her this week at the FINAL SIREN. Be there!

Here are my favorites of her videos, and why she is the best pop artist on the scene today:

SIREN Preview: Janet

If there's one female pop artist who has had the most influence on my life, it is Janet Jackson. Ever since I was a child, I have been mesmerized by her ability to dance, sing, and break new ground in the world of performance. Without her ingenuity, in self and collaboration, dance pop would not be the same. She molded hip-hop to synth-pop, and street to club sounds before most of today's artists (who claim to do the same so originally) were out of elementary school.
I can still remember the first time I saw her streak out on the MTV Music Awards and rip open "Black Cat" from the iconic Rhythm Nation album. I can vividly recollect how the janet. album's "If" hit my ears and I never looked at choreographed dance-pop the same ever again. And, lastly, I can still remember seeing the Velvet Rope Tour (my first of 3 of her tours) and being floored by how elaborate, perfectly executed, and engaging it was.
She is, unlike a lot of today's pop artist, the one who truly portrays aggression in her music in a fashion that not only makes you want to deliberately express yourself, but you cannot help but hum the melodies that painted such ferocities delicate hues of pop sensibility all day long.

She is a true heroine of music, and she deserves to be honored this weekend at the FINAL SIREN!

Now, here are a few reasons why Ms. Jackson is a-fucking-mazing

pop vomit: katy perry T.G.I.F. remixes

Here are a couple decent remixes I came across of Katy Perry's recent lyrical masterpiece, "Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)."
Wow- she really is something. I am almost starting to like her audacity enough to not hate her as an artist. Almost. Give me a few more months and/or years. Also, this track is so much better than anything she's released so far on this album... And, I'm not even kidding. The video helps, I have to admit (God knows I love Debbie Gibson looking cracked out as hell).

Check out these two lovely remixes that you may or may not hear me play at a venue near you soon. Enjoy!

SIREN Preview: Kylie

Kylie is best seen (and heard) in video. I cannot imagine my music collection without her in it. Here is a little Kylie Minogue preview for Friday's KYLIE vs. ROBYN vs. JANET party! Here's a megamix plus some of my other video favorites of the queen of gay pop.
AND MY ULTIMATE FAVORITE!...

remix monday: a classic - with every heartbeat (kleerup remix)

Remixed by the producer of the track.
Everyone should own this.
That is all.
Thank you.

Oh hell... let's take a stroll down memory lane...

Someone Like You (Buffetlibre remix) - Adele

Ummm... just. plain. fantfuckingtastic. Buffetlibre has done it again. AGAIN! Oh, I love them. And, Adele, bless her cholesterolic heart... that bitch can make you cry. And, in this case, dance as well.

Time to cut a rug AND YOUR WRISTS! Hooray!

3 track thursday: röyksopp remixes

So today I have been in a Royksopp mood. A big one! I just got a ticket to the one-time-only Robyn/Royksopp show in L.A. on October 22, and I'm basically peeing my pants. Anyway, this definitely got me in the mood to hear some sonically perfect Royksopp remixes, and ta-dah... perfect segway to a 3-Track-Thursday! The first two here have that signature Royksopp sound of the last 2 albums, but the last track has a more old-school gorgeous, lush slow sound. Enjoy!

JUDAS (ROYKSOPP remix) - LADY GAGA

PUPPETS (ROYKSOPP remix) - DEPECHE MODE

IN THIS SHIRT (ROYKSOPP remix) - THE IRREPRESSIBLES

fresh: J-Lo gets hypnotized by Gaga

I'm not a huge fan of Jennifer Lopez. There- I said it. I know you all are very shocked. She is, indeed, nothing close to quality, BUT- I do have an open mind when it comes to quality pop music. So, when my friend Michael decided to throw me a bonus track from Jennifer's new idiotically titled L.P., (L.O.V.E? or whatever the hell it's called), that was written by Lady Gaga (which nowadays doesn't say much), I was both intrigued and skeptical. But, lopez and be-effing-hold, it's pretty damned good. It won't change your life, but it should make you dance.

And, yes, if you notice that dance beat seeming familiar, it's the same 119 BPM that Lady Gaga can't stop fellating (e.g. Just Dance, Poker Face, Money Honey, Bad Romance ... ALL in 119.0). Hooray!

essential tuesday: the song of my month

Over the last month I have come across some wonderful music. Some really made me dance, some made me think, some will be as disposable as it was acquirable, and some will stay with me for a very, very long time. This song has been in my head, consuming my actions, and becoming the very quiet soundtrack to my existence over the last 5 weeks. I have loved every second of this track from the first moment I heard it, and am still not sure why it won't depart my brain. The one thing I can point out is that it is the epitome of what I love in music (and life, really): simplicity done so perfectly you never realize how much of an homage it is to its complexities until you really sit down and soak it in like a sponge.

This is a remix of a Gorillaz track that is about a year old called On Melancholy Hill. I posted it recently on my Facebook page and a lot of people enjoyed it. I figured it wasn't completely given its due until a write-up on the blog did such. So, here it is:

Remixed by Feed Me a famous British DJ, Producer, and overall studio sorcerer whose real name is Jon Gooch, aka "Spor." "Feed Me" is his side project.

I had some personal things going on in my life over the last few weeks that definitely made this song resonate more. That really is what's perfect about such songs, though... they catch you in a moment and give it a soundtrack to enhance that feeling. And, even if that feeling is sadness, remorse, or simply a heartbreaking acceptance/resignation into reality, it must be appreciated for making us feel more alive. Nothing, after all, is worse than numbness.

Below are also the original track and video, which is beautiful in its own right, but not as sonically pretty as the remix.
