SIREN Preview: Robyn

Robyn has gone from a prominent international teen pop star in the 1990's, to relative obscurity, then resurfacing in 2006 with one of the best pop albums in ages, Robyn. To prove that such was not a fluke, she returned and gave the proverbial 'fuck you' to the rules of record making and put out three different sets of songs in one year, instead of just on full album of tracks she'd wind up growing tired of performing for 2 straight subsequent years.

What is most fascinating about Robyn is not only her ability to write, sing, perform, and capture a crowd, but her immaculate consistency. Her ability to grasp the true essence of pop music is what separates her from her contemporaries.

It is when you hear her music that you realize that the Katy Perrys, Ke$has, Britney Spears's, et al may be enjoyable, but they've never been able to accomplish what Robyn has: derive deeply passionate, universally relatable, intelligently written, and masterfully produced pop music. And then, she blows you away on stage with a performance (yes, I was at the show below) full of so much energy and true artistry that you never look at pop music the same way again.
It is not so often that pop music makes me think, or challenges me in any way, but Robyn does it consistently. I love her and I hope she's around for a long time. I'm so excited to play a lot more of her this week at the FINAL SIREN. Be there!

Here are my favorites of her videos, and why she is the best pop artist on the scene today:
