Song of the Summer #7: "The Riot's Gone" - Santigold

As I've stated a few times, my favorite 2012 album so far is Santigold's sophomore LP (suck it, slump) Master of My Make-Believe.  Within this album there are no less than FIVE superb tracks, and three in particular I consider to be in the top 10 best songs of the year, thus far.

Santigold really puts herself on an incredibly vulnerable stage here.  She speaks from a place of inner turmoil turned vanquished soul, yet always potently self-aware.  To me, at least, it is a song about being trapped within oneself, and how one relates to the world - yet oddly comfortable in one's self-made bed of nails.  A song that can easily be related to relationships, as well as the psychological storms that often beget a lush creation.

This is definitely my reflective song of the summer.

fresh: "Disparate Youth" - Santigold

I did not love "Big Mouth," but I tolerated it lovingly. Santigold is separating herself, once again, from indie/pop cross-over artists, and proving how versatile she is. This is what I wanted: a sound nothing like her first single that proves how awesomely eclectic your sound remains. Her first album ventured so many different directions, and all signs point to her staying the course and upping her game.

Consider "Big Mouth" the "Creator" of her new album, and this track the "Lights Out."

The new album, Master of My Make Believe, is due out May 1st. Hoo-fucking-ray! She's so fucking great. Please, girl, don't let me down...

essential: "I'm a Lady" - Santigold

This song has made a smashing return to my playlists recently. It makes me so happy. It's introspective, relaxed, and self-indulgent in all the healthiest ways. It's kind of like a recovery Sunday morning after a night that may have got a little bit too crazy.

I'm really excited for new Santigold. She's pretty damned talented, and deserves to rise to the top on her own merits. Anyway, if you don't have this, here's your chance...

fresh: Santigold returns!

Santi White, the NYC-based and wonderfully talented songstress returns with this new single, Big Mouth. If you like Santigold, you will like this track. What I really enjoy about her is that she had every opportunity in the world (at least one would think) to popularize her sound and drown it out with production and big studio money, but she instead has stayed creative, rooted, and raw in her delivery... and I hope the rest of her new album keeps my ears just as happy.

For the casual listener, it is easy to notice that Santigold is an acquired taste. But, for those that appreciate the depth of her sound and the diversity of her style, you are greatly rewarded. Indulge:

It seems that I have been expanding my blog recently, post-wise, and (instead of just posting monday through Thursday (Remix Monday, Essential Tuesday, Fresh Wednesday, 3-Track (random) Thursday), I have been throwing in a lot of Friday entries... so we might as well call these (often fun and carefree tracks) weekend songs... So, here's your inaugural (official) Weekenditty:

This song is a must have for your Autumn song collection. It has been in my 10 or so song loop in the last couple weeks, and I now deem it quality enough to share with you bitches and hoes out there. Y'all will dig this track- I swear. It is by Spank Rock, an artist often seen playing second fiddle in a lot of indie/hip-hop tracks, but now is front-and-center for us to enjoy. His good friend, and super-talented girl, Santigold adds her unique flavor (goddamn, I love her vocals) to the track. This is just fun and lite without being watered down and boring. Enjoy!
