41 MINS | 31 SONGS | NON-STOP KYLIE MAJRmix

Kylie, as many know, is my #2.  She is second only by inches to the great ROBYN, and I will adore Kylie and her influence for years to come (into my world).  She is simply the Empress of Electro, Queen of Club, Down Under Doyenne of Dance, International Sovereign of Synthpop, Prima Donna of Provocative, and our very own Aphrodite.  Here are 41 minutes of 31 songs in a non-stop homage mix to the one and only KYLIE MINOGUE!

fresh: "Skyfall" (Cosmic Dawn v. MAJR edit) - Adele

Ol' tons-o'-fun Adele returns here with her contribution to a tradition even more British than she is... Skyfall for the latest 007 film.  To be honest, I could care less about James Bond, and I've never thought of any single one of his versions as attractive, nor do I fall over for his apparently suave nature.  Give me Frodo with hairy feet, ugly friends, and old gay wizards any day.

In any case, Cosmic Dawn is one of the most superb producers out there, and once again the Scandinavian sorcerer of synth returns with a dance remix of a track no one else had yet to conquer for the clubs.  And, now that's over.  So, I edited it to my liking, and the rest is history.  It might not be a straight-up crazy Pound the Alarm-esque bloop-blip-bloop-blip-bloop status quo track- but that's why I enjoy it.  It brings a splash of retro trance into the mix in all the right ways.  Not really Tïesto or AVB-style, but more Paul Van Dyk (IMO the king of trance-dance).

So, that's that.  Enjoy the delightfully chunky chanteuse haunting away your dreams until you dance your way into a midnight snack with her:

indie VIDEO overload: 6 fresh sounds for you

During this time off (3-4 weeks...), I really thought about my roots in music... and I know I've dived deeply into quality pop over the last three years to great extent and expense.
It's time to bring it back a little (balance is good) to focus on the sounds that made me who I am, musically.  INDIE dance, rock, pop, and folk have been my loves, my foundation, and my consolation... and they are what awakened my ears to such an expanse.

Definitely dive into "Endless Wave" by PARADISE and dive into a rare STROKES sample by Heartsrevolution in "Not that Hard to Explain."  Brilliant.

So, here are a few quality indie rock videos to get your ears and eyes agape to new things (god I hate using the word 'things').  My first INDIE OVERLOAD entry:

introducing: PHEBE STARR

Apologies for the wait between posts.  I've been updating the TUMBLR, in the meantime.  On Wednesday, I'll focus on some new quality indie videos from acts that should be much more popular than they are on this side of the Atlantic, but today I wish to focus on a beaming new star(r)let: Phebe Starr.  Fresh from Down Under, this lovely little minx is ready to claim the ears of lovers of Sia, Marina, Florence, Bjork, Imogen, Regina, et al.  I missed the boat on this particular track, (released this summer), but it's new to me, and I'm in love.  What about you?

weekenditty: "I Need Your Love (MAJR club edit)" - Calvin Harris ft. Ellie Goulding

Calvin Harris has done it again.  He isn't going to blow you away, as far as production, but his ability to create danceable electro-house is second-to-none in the current musical environment.  He's just the best, right now.  So, when Ellie Goulding's new album Halcyon dropped on Tuesday, I swooped in and grabbed what is sure to be the next track to storm the club Bastille: a collaboration titled I Need Your Love with Mr. Harris (LIP MY STOCKING!).
I desperately wanted to play it live, so I put it in MAJR studio magic box of eargasmic tinkerings, and manipulated it.  I took out some filler, sped it up to a proper house bpm, added an intro and outro loop, and borrowed a dub from another extended Harris mix.  This will do until the actual extended is released... and it might not even have to be replaced.  Woot.

Here's to a LOVEly weekend.

"Sweet Nothing" - Calvin/Florence video & majr edit

MAJReview: SummerPop 2012

Every three months I put out a review of the previous season, and this one was a lot of hard work and patience to make.  I really wasn't satisfied with it until late, and I really wanted to produce the best product possible.  Also, on a personal note, this summer was a time of rediscovering myself a bit - or, rather, returning to the good parts of myself I had been missing for a while.  Also, I got laid a lot- which was awesome.

So, this mix is about sexuality, optimism, and moving forward... It's basically a SHOWTIME series in 45 mins.  So, enjoy these 30 non-stop tracks...

NEW VIDEO:

My Summer Vacation | MAJR's Top 10 Beyoncé Songs

I won't explain how much I adore Beyoncé any more than I have through the invite copy, promoting, and general tomfoolery I've committed throughout the process.. What I can say is that tonight is going to be a glorious shitshow.

Well, that and this:
Beyoncé is one of the biggest stars on the planet, but she has street cred.  She can back up her talk with an elegant walk and one hell of a raucous performance that is anything but the synthetic, derived output of her contemporaries.  The bitch has my respect, and (like a proper trollop) she relentlessly puts out.

TONIGHT @ SIREN, we celebrate.
My TOP-10 (definitely in order...)

10. Lose My Breath
09. Love on Top
08. Jumpin' Jumpin'

LEMZ Tells Us What Makes His Beyoncé Balls Bounce

FORWARD
DJ LEMZ, or better known to me as Steve (Lemmerman), is an amazing DJ.
He just also happens to be a good friend of mine.
LEMZ is the kind of person, and professional, around whom you forget his age.  Perhaps this is because his life has led him to grow up at a slightly accelerated rate, or the homework he has done to give himself the aesthetically solid perspective needed to perform with such eclecticism.  But, mostly I think it is because he's completely permeable to the world around him.  It is that kind of affability that will all but guarantee his success in both of those areas.
He's one of THE FEW artists with whom I will play back-and-forth, because I trust his taste and execution (usually I just take over and close a night to make sure the place is dancing all night).  You will get to see this dynamic tomorrow @ SIREN: The BEYONCÉ BALL, and I hope you appreciate how awesome this kid is.  He'sa He'sa a Diva.
Now, here's what he had to say about Beyoncé, and what the bitch means to him:

If you wanted me to sum up why I love Queen Bey, you'd be better off asking why I DON'T love her. And, if you were to ask that, my only answer would be "Because I wasn't adopted by Jay & Bey with my name legally changed to Blue Ivy Carter.  This also kills any chance I'll ever have to bathe in a $5,200 pink Swarovski-crystal studded bathtub, but I digress.

Let's talk about my love for Beyoncé, shall we? That woman embodies female empowerment. She exudes elegance and graceful sensuality like no other pop star out there. Let's be real - which living person (gay or straight) wouldn't want to be a best friend and/or lover of Bey Bey?! Her voice and music make me want to get down on any dance floor and turn it the hell out!

Even as an engaged man, I will ALWAYS sing loudly at my fiancee and rapidly wave my ring finger at him any time or place that 'Single Ladies' is played. There's absolutely no other song out there that can pull out my inner strong woman like 'Run the World (Girls)'. Wanna know what happens to me when I hear 'Diva' while on the dance floor? Oh girl, not much except me TAKING CHARGE AND OWNING THE ROOM

People need to realize that we all owe a gigantic thank you to that woman.  I can't even fathom the countless amount of women who kicked their busted-ass man to the curb after one listen to 'Irreplaceable.'  So, thank you Queen Bey for showing every other female in the music game that one day they might be able to come in second place to you if they follow your footsteps exactly. Which they won't, because that's way too daunting of a task.

SIREN DJ Charlie Kordes Tells Us Why He Beweaves in Beyoncé

I wanted to give the other DJs for Friday's big event a chance to say what BEYONCÉ means to them, and what their TOP 10 favorite songs are.  So, first up is Charlie Kordes.  Charlie, a guy I've known for years to have stellar music tastes, is not only a great person (and friend), but really brings that positive energy to his performance.

He is on first on Friday (10:00-11:30p), and is sure to get you dancing during the 10:00-11:00p OPEN VODKA upstairs.

"10.  Smash Into You
9.  Ring the Alarm
8.  Naughty Girl
7.  Lose My Breath
6.  Sweet Dreams
5.  Jumpin', Jumpin'
4.  Get Me Bodied
3.  Love On Top
2.  Beautiful Liar
1.  Why Don't You Love Me
What can you say about Beyonce?  Unashamed of who she is and willing to put it all out there she puts everything out there from inane sugar pop songs that make your booty bounce to soaring ballads that make you wonder if this woman has ever heard of restraint.  I love Baby B because she continues to reinvent herself while always staying true to her roots and sound.  She is pure fun and while every album is guaranteed to have a few songs that you love right off the bat the best comes to those who continue to listen falling in love more gradually.  That is Beyonce's magic... making you fall in love with her, even if you do everything to resist her bootylicious charms.  Damn you B.

xoxo,
Charlisse"

fresh: "How To Be A Heartbreaker (MAJR club edit)" - Marina & the Diamonds

So, I'm dying to play this song in sets, but it's been very difficult to do so, so I made this.

It's really that simple.

You're welcome.

This was a little more of a pain in the ass than I expected, but it was totally worth it.  I had to drop the tempo to a more mixable speed (133bpm), and then adjust the bass levels so that they had more dance floor intensity.  In certain areas, I basically dropped the bottom out of the song in order to make the chorus pop more.  In the end, I think this MAJR club edit does Marina & the Diamonds justice, and makes me dance around when I play it... and that's all that really matters.

The one thing I will say is that I couldn't quite get the bass levels right, so you DJs out there might want to drop your level a tiny bit, depending on your system.

Enjoy:

RMX MON: "Only Insomnia in the World" - Rihanna v. Faithless

About a month ago, I discovered this mash-up (which originally dropped in October 2010), and I cannot stop using it in my workout mixes.  I edited it a bit, but it's definitely the best of both worlds.  DJs From Mars really worked this out well.  It has the unmistakable trance feel of Faithless' Insomnia... which basically takes me back to "those days" of questionable choices.  To make it even better, the most iconic chords in Insomnia are laced behind the chorus of one of (perhaps) Rihanna's most powerful tracks.  If not her most powerful, it's easily her most empowering.  In any case, this is great for working out, running, or just doing "questionable" deeds.
As far as my editing, I definitely increased tempo, took out a great deal of fat that would bore a dance floor, put a back-beat on the down-tempo moments (which were superfluous), added a really cool quiver in the middle of the song that makes my heart smile, and made the most of one of the best mash-up ideas I've ever heard.  Also, check out the original tracks, below- it really brings it all into context.  Enjoy:

Song of the Summer #8: "Live in this City (Heren v. MAJR edit)" - Dragonette

Dragonette, how I love thee.  I cannot wait to see you in a few weeks, and then to hear your new album the following week.  It's going to be an indie pop eargasm all autumn.  Woot.  This is also basically my theme song for my graduate tenure in Tucson.

In any case, a remix was released that was pretty great, but needed to be beefed up a bit, while cutting the fat, and that's what I did here... so, instead of boring you with some nonsensical shit... here's a good weekenditty:

Below is the original version of this track.  It isn't too different, just less mixable.  It really is making me, as previously stated, anticipate the new LP.  So excited.  Thanks to Heren for making a hell of a remix, by the way.
