fresh: new Martin Solveig vidja "ready to go"

...well maybe it's not fresh as a fucking daisy, but the shit's new to me. Woohoo! I love everything off Martin Solveig's album, especially this track! In case you were wondering, yes that is Kele (lead singer of Bloc Party) on vocals. Love him.

essential tuesday: "chinese" - lily allen (doctor rosen rosen remix)

Sometimes, upon falling out of myself, I think about how I want the stability of a long term relationship and a life relaxed in its own same solidity. Until that day happens, I have this song I listen to all the time to remind of what that may feel like. This remix is so fucking stellar. It is simply joy.

This Saturday's Party = a little like this..

I Wanna Go: Best Britney single in years (video/download)

A ways back in my review of the new Britney Spears album, Femme Fatale, I rated I Wanna Go the 2nd best track on the album (behind Trip To Your Heart), and said it would be her biggest hit as a single. Now... here we go! It's out. The video's out... and the rest shall soon be history.

If you've heard any of my sets over the last few months, this song has been in heavy rotation. I think I mostly like it because it's so similar in structure to Robyn's Time Machine. It's no surprise that they share the same producer. In any case, enjoy! And if you download nothing else from this album, enjoy this track. It'll come off as fluffy but in the end you'll be dancing with your hands in the air.

Trust.

essential tuesday (2): little boots "earthquake" remix

I love Little Boots. Y'all know that. I can't wait until new material surfaces. But, until then, we must deal with what isn't new and can be edited to near-perfection. Such is life in a life worth dancing as much as possible.
What I did was speed this bitch up, cut out the fat in the beginning, the lull in the middle, and the blah outro... and ta-dah!... a danceable, mixable track! woot! Below is also the video to the original track! Love love love Little Boots.

essential tuesday: "Big In Japan" (NEW Martin Solveig ft. Dragonette!)

Every single time Martin Solveig uses Dragonette, magic happens! This song is the latest in a string of tracks where the king of French dance-pop, Martin Solveig, has used the highly underrated talents of Dragonette/Martina Sorbara. God I heart this track... and give it a day and you will NOT be able to get get it out of your head. Also, if you haven't heard the rest of what I believe is the best dance record since Robyn's Body Talk, I'll be posting it this week! Welcome to MARTIN SOLVEIG WEEK!

Below is a preview wave to hear and the download is the full track! :)

florence covers buddy holly

Check out this interesting cover of Buddy Holly's "Not Fade Away" by Florence + The Machine. Ms. Welch definitely puts her stamp on this bluesy track. I'm still getting into it- though not completely in love yet. The song is part of a new compilation tribute album with a lovely lineup of artists covering the iconic musician, including Julian Casablancas and Fiona Apple. As with all things, I am sure she will rock it out when she plays it live. I'm flying to Orlando to see her do just that on June 30th! Woohoo!

remix monday: designer drugs new vid for old rmx!

This remix popped into my inbox almost 2 years ago, but is apparently now available on iTunes? Who cares how late it is, this remix is still one of my favorites and makes me want to dance in a dark room with lots of lasers.

Designer Drugs are a duo whom I consider one of the most progressive and danceable producers/DJs out there. Always on the heavy side, they really transmit the idea of aggressive dance, and... well... you know that's RIGHT up my alley. This is the most ravey of any remix they've made, but it does such very well. Check out the brand new video for the remix, as well!

DO NOT MISS Designer Drugs at U Street Music Hall (11/U NW DC) this weekend! Tickets HERE!

10 BIG GAY SONGS for TONIGHT!

TONIGHT
So tonight is my PRIDE SET from 9:00 - 11:00p @ THE NEWSEUM! I'm so excited. To give you a preview, and celebrate, what big gay dance music should be, here are 10 tracks you'll probably hear me spill tonight! GET EXCITED!!!

NEW Sneaky Sound System!

Yes, I am so sorry it's taken me almost two weeks to post this, but getting ready for TONIGHT's PRIDE PARTY has been exhausting. I'm going to bring my A-game, that's for sure, and this song may indeed be a part of it! Definitely dive into the unique, awesome sounds of the one and only SNEAKY SOUND SYSTEM!

fresh: new MEL C ... yes, Mel C

The most talented (IMO) of the Spice wenches, Melanie C (sporty spice), has returned with a fluffy little number that I deem tolerable. I may even like this a great deal... but only time will tell. Here's the vidja. Apparently this single drops at the end of the month and the new LP drops in September. It's no I Turn To You, but enjoy anyway, y'all!

my current song obsession - cherry red

The oft-drunk, overtly talented, and eternally sassy Norweigan Ida Maria returns with this amazing track and solid album, Katla (which came out today, and I kind of love it). 8 tracks of indie dance rock angst mixed with hilarious lines from a girl who is bound to break it big. God this is fun stuff. Cherry Red is A MUST HEAR. Do it.
Other tracks I love are "10000 Lovers," which has its fair share of hilarious one-liners, "Let's Leave," a humorous look at wanting to become more domestic because of one's messy nature under the influence, and "Quite Nice People," a shockingly slow and sarcastic album opener that sounds more like a Regina Spektor meets She & Him track. And, I love it. There are a couple tosses in this album (toward the end), but 6/8 good tracks is quite solid. Enjoy!
And, just because I feel nice today, I'll throw in my favorite older track (and video) by Ida Maria! Here you go!

remix monday: big gurl gets angry (adele rmx edit)

There's not much else to say. The original is fucking sassy as hell, and really a great track in its own right. The RASCAL remix needed to be edited, and I did it. Here ya go! It's not perfect, but it'll make your ass dance. And that's what matters. Hell to the Yes.

Capital Pride & Brightest Young Things Announce

Official Pride Party: “Somewhere…”

Newseum to Host the Official Party of Capital Pride on Friday, June 10

Thursday, May 12, 2010

Washington, DC – Today, Capital Pride and BrightestYoungThings.com announced an exciting collaboration to present the official party of the 2011 Capital Pride Celebration. “Capital Pride & Brightest Young Things present: Somewhere…” will be an over-the-top event held at the Newseum on Friday, June 10 from 9:00pm to 1:00am.

"Capital Pride is proud to team with the Newseum and Brightest Young Things to celebrate the LGBT community in the D.C. area," said Scott Lusk, Communications Director for Capital Pride. "We look forward to the seeing the entire community - including allies and friends - joining us to celebrate diversity in Washington, DC."

This is the second year that Brightest Young Things has partnered with Capital Pride, and the third event that BYT has produced at the Newseum this past year. Talent will feature international DJ Lauren Flax, DJ and performer Ultra Naté along with DJ collaborator Lisa Moody, and popular Washington DJs Natty Boom (of DJ collective Anthology of Booty and the Homo/Sonic parties) and DJ MAJR (of the popular parties SHIFT and SIREN). Additional details will be announced soon, but Brightest Young Things already promises an over-the-top fete complete with cocktail bars in every elevator and a dance party in the Newseum’s six-story atrium.

“The ‘Somewhere…’ theme of this party is the perfect tribute to Capital Pride,” said Svetlana Legetic, Editor of Brightest Young Things. “Somewhere…” is the better place that we all dream of. It is whatever you want it to be. Capital Pride has been creating that better place here in Washington for thirty-six years. Of course, Brightest Young Things is working to ensure that any party that alludes to a place ‘over the rainbow’ is over-the-top itself. I’ve been in three staff meetings already on this event where serious conversations have centered on rainbow lasers, glitter, and a benefit analysis of utilizing prancing ponies versus purple unicorns.”

“Capital Pride & Brightest Young Things Present: Somewhere…” will be held on Friday, June 10 at the Newseum. A limited number of pre-sale tickets are currently available at $15. Tickets are available at: http://dcpride.eventbrite.com

Capital Pride is organized by Capital Pride Alliance, Inc., a non-profit entity incorporated in the District of Columbia with the sole purpose of supporting, planning, implementing and assessing the annual Capital Pride events and related activities throughout the year. Capital Pride’s 36th Anniversary Celebration will feature nearly two weeks of activities, events and educational forums beginning June 2nd and running through June 12th.

Brightest Young Things bills itself as an online afterparty for the interesting and interested of Washington, DC. It has grown to become the go-to place for information on Washington’s nightlife art, and comedy scene. With dozens of photographers and writers, BYT documents the culture of the District of Columbia. Last year, Brightest Young Things launched its BYGays initiative (www.brightestyoungthings.com/gays) in an effort to develop the talents of local gay writers, performers, and photographers.

Death Cab For Cutie - favorite 5

Death Cab For Cutie has painted my twenties a bittersweet hue with their intense, yet often simple, lyrics and messages. Sometimes the verbiage is obvious, but I always forgive them for such, as they have a style so unique that I can now (ironically) hear their influence in so many contemporary bands/acts (The Decemberists, Fanfarlo, Plushgun, Owl City, The Shins, Coldplay) that they pre-date. I got my first taste of DCFC when I was 19 and heard a song, which remains one of my favorites, called Styrofoam Plates, a rancorous anti-patriarchal track that remained beautiful within its vulnerable and morose anger.

The new album, Codes And Keys, is pretty great so far. None of the tracks are listed below because I have only had the album a few days, but I definitely recommend it! Great album and one of the best of the year so far, for me.
Here are my favorite FIVE Death Cab For Cutie tracks. I'm so excited to see them tonight for the second time. But, this time it's in a real club (9:30 Club), not that polished turd of a venue at D.A.R. Constitutional Hall.

5.) Marching Bands Of Manhattan
This is a track that means the world to me. I still listen to it nearly every time I am entering Manhattan. I also attach some fond memories of an old friend to the track, which helps bring it to even more life that it probably merits. It's a gorgeous, lush track about the eternal optimism that love can spring, despite the sadness in many of our existences.

4.) What Sarah Said
"And it came to me then that every plan is a tiny prayer to Father Time." A song about mourning and appreciating the risks you take, even when they lead to failure, sadness, or the inevitable death. "Love is watching someone die." BTW- this video is pretty fucking amazing.

3.) Styrofoam Plates
The first track I'd ever heard from Death Cab, from a pretty amazing album, The Photo Album, which marked a new sense of maturity in the band's sound. I've already remarked on what this song means to me, but I can't stress enough how much it changed my tastes. After The Photo Album came the best album DCFC has made, from which the only two songs better than "Styrofoam Plates" came.

2.) A Lack Of Color
The perfect album ending track, "A Lack Of Color" still gives me goosebumps. Simple, beautiful, acoustic guitar driven, and one of my favorite songs ever. The perfect late night driving song. "This is fact, not fiction, for the first time in years..."

1.) Transatlanticism
I am still very much moved by this song. It is an awe-inspiring piece that is the highlight of an album that I doubt DCFC will ever top. It is nothing short of the most gorgeous piece of music they've ever produced. A song to which anyone who cannot be with their loved one(s) can relate. Or, anyone who has loved and felt the inundation (through the repeated water allusions) that such complicated emotion brings. I love this song so much.
